Overview

About WhatsTheCatch

WhatsTheCatch reads a contract, lease, or other agreement a user uploads or photographs page by page, then produces a plain-language summary, a 0-100 risk score, and a separate list of red flags, missing protections, and negotiable terms. It runs on a bring-your-own-key model: the user supplies their own Anthropic API key, the app never stores the key or document content on a server, and traffic goes only between the user's browser and Anthropic's API. It is one of several small single-purpose document tools, alongside similarly named ScamCheck and DescribeThat, built by Iacoletti Software, a small US/Germany-based software and publishing outfit run by Louis Iacoletti and Anja Sinn. The tool explicitly does not replace a lawyer, accountant, or doctor.

Pros & cons of WhatsTheCatch

medium confidence

WhatsTheCatch is a narrow, honest tool: it reads a document you give it and hands back a risk score and a red-flag list instead of asking you to trust a black box or hand your document to a stranger's server. Being BYOK means you need your own API key and pay Anthropic's usage rates directly, which is a real barrier for non-technical users.

Pros

  • No document or API key is stored server-side, per its stated architecture
  • Produces a specific 0-100 risk score plus itemized red flags rather than a vague summary
  • Accepts page-by-page photos, not just clean PDFs
  • Free to use beyond the user's own API cost

Cons

  • Requires the user to obtain and manage their own Anthropic API key, a real setup barrier
  • Explicitly not a substitute for licensed legal, medical, or financial advice
  • Built and maintained by a very small operation, not a company with a support team

Best for

  • People who want a first pass on a lease or contract before it goes to a lawyer
  • Users who already have an Anthropic API key and want document privacy
  • Quick red-flag checks on medical or financial paperwork

Not for

  • Users without an Anthropic API key or unwilling to set one up
  • Anyone needing an actual legal opinion instead of a plain-language summary

Watch out: Because it's BYOK, cost isn't zero - the user's Anthropic account gets billed per document based on tokens processed, on top of whatever page-photo volume they submit.
