Overview

About Turnitin

Turnitin compares submitted student work against publications, web content and prior submissions and reports similarity, and since 2023 adds a separate indicator estimating how much of a document was machine-written. The line now spans Feedback Studio for grading and originality, Gradescope for paper-based and STEM assessment, ExamSoft for secure offline exams, iThenticate for publishers and researchers, and Clarity, a 2026 writing-analytics layer that tracks how a draft was produced instead of only flagging it. Products plug into Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and D2L through LTI. It is sold to institutions on quoted licences after a sales consultation; Turnitin, LLC has served education since 1998 from Oakland, California and has been part of Advance since 2019.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Turnitin

medium confidence

The incumbent for a reason: the submission database and the LMS integrations are what institutions buy, and no challenger matches either. Treat the AI-writing indicator as a prompt for a conversation, not a verdict; Turnitin itself now sells Clarity to show how a draft was written because a percentage alone keeps producing disputes, and the price only arrives after a sales call.

Pros

  • Largest comparison corpus of prior student submissions, which web-only checkers lack
  • LTI integrations with the major learning management systems
  • One contract covers grading, originality, exams and manuscript screening
  • Clarity adds process evidence about how a draft was written, not just a flag

Cons

  • No public pricing; every deal is an institutional quote
  • AI-writing detection produces false positives and has been contested by students
  • Student papers feed the comparison database, a long-running data-rights objection
  • The public site refuses automated fetches, which complicates monitoring

Best for

  • Universities and school districts that need similarity checking wired into Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard or D2L
  • Publishers and research offices screening manuscripts through iThenticate
  • Assessment teams that want grading, proctored exams and integrity from one vendor

Not for

  • Individual students or freelancers, who cannot buy a licence directly
  • Anyone who needs the AI-writing score to stand as proof on its own

Watch out: The AI indicator is an estimate the vendor itself hedges; a policy that treats it as evidence will generate appeals, so budget for review workflows, not just the licence.
