Pipedream

Pipedream is a mature, code-friendly automation platform — write a few lines of real code where no-code tools fall short, drawing on a large library of pre-built integrations. Its recent acquisition by Workday is worth watching, since roadmap priorities may shift toward Workday's own enterprise customers over time.

Pros

  • Over 3,000 pre-built app integrations and 10,000+ ready actions cut down custom integration work
  • Supports actual Node.js/Python code alongside no-code steps, not one or the other
  • Connect lets other companies embed Pipedream's integrations into their own products
  • SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, and GDPR compliance claims support production and enterprise use

Cons

  • Credit-based pricing makes costs harder to predict than a flat per-seat plan
  • Recently acquired by Workday, so long-term independent roadmap and pricing are uncertain
  • Free tier's credit allowance is small enough that real workflows need a paid plan quickly

Stepper

Stepper's pitch is describing a workflow in plain language instead of wiring nodes by hand, backed by an integration library from an established form-building company rather than a brand-new startup. The free plan's 200 steps a month is workable for light use, but MCP and agent-facing features are new enough that depth compared to established automation platforms is still unproven.

  • Conversational editor generates automation logic from a plain-language description
  • Connects to more than 480 apps rather than a narrow integration list
  • Free plan (200 steps/month) is usable on its own, not just a trial
  • MCP compatibility lets AI agents trigger or use workflows as tools

Cons

  • Backed by a company (Paperform) primarily known for form-building, not automation, so track record in this category is newer
  • Credits on the Pro plan can run out on heavy workflows, requiring paid top-ups
  • Conversational generation quality on complex, multi-branch workflows wasn't something we could verify hands-on
