What our research says

Pictory

Right choice if you already have written or recorded material and need a steady stream of captioned marketing clips. It is a text-to-video assembler built on stock footage, not a generative film tool, so judge it on speed and captions rather than originality of imagery.

Pros

  • accepts an unusually wide input set: URL, PDF, PowerPoint, audio, long-form video
  • text-based editing means correcting the script re-cuts the video
  • ElevenLabs voices and voice cloning bundled from the Professional tier
  • documented API on its own plan for programmatic generation

Cons

  • annual plans allocate video minutes and AI credits per year, not per month
  • output quality is capped by how well the stock library matches your script
  • no permanent free plan, only a limited trial
  • API is a separate purchase rather than an add-on to existing seats

VideoGen

This is the assembly-line end of AI video: you are not directing shots, you are handing over a script and getting a watchable explainer or ad back with narration, footage and captions already in place. The timeline editor afterwards is what separates it from the one-click generators — you can fix the bits it got wrong instead of regenerating. Credits, not the subscription, are what actually limits you, and the API is a separate purchase at a big step up in price.

Pros

  • One pass produces script, voiceover, matched b-roll, subtitles and music together
  • Browser timeline editor lets you fix the output rather than only reroll it
  • Text-to-speech and translation cover 40+ languages
  • Pro includes commercial rights and API access; storage is a stated 50 GB rather than vague

Cons

  • Credit metering means the monthly price is a floor, not a ceiling — heavy generation costs more
  • B-roll selection is only as good as the library, and repeated stock clips are noticeable across a channel
  • The production API is a large separate line item ($360/month) rather than usage-priced
