Use tool ↗About Phedra
Phedra edits images from written instructions instead of layers and brushes: swap a background, recolour an object, change the text inside a graphic, cut out a subject or upscale to 4K. It ships as a web app plus a Chrome extension that acts on images you come across while browsing, aimed at people making posters, logos, thumbnails and social posts without design software. The product was previously sold as Synthesys X by Synthesys, and the old synthesys.io/x address now forwards here. Pricing is a single flat subscription rather than a credit pack, with throughput capped per three-hour window.

Pros & cons of Phedra
Describing a change to a picture you already have is genuinely quicker than opening a design tool, and the extension puts that one click away from anything you are browsing. The catch is a rebrand mid-flight: Synthesys X became Phedra X, only an annual price is legible on the pricing page, and the API is a business request-access form rather than something you can sign up for.
Pros
- Prompt-driven edits applied to an existing image rather than generating from scratch
- Chrome extension works on images in place while you browse
- Includes 4K upscaling, background removal and in-image text changes
- One flat subscription instead of metered credits
Cons
- Rate-limited to roughly 150 generations per three hours, so not unlimited throughput
- No refunds, and the only clearly displayed price is an annual commitment
- The API is offered only through a business request-access form, with no public documentation found
Best for
- Reworking a reference image found online into a poster, thumbnail or social post
- Non-designers who need colour, text or background changes without Photoshop
- People who edit images while browsing and want it in the same tab
Not for
- Teams needing a documented API or automation hooks
- Anyone who needs a pixel-exact edit or a faithful reproduction of the original
Watch out: This tool was catalogued as Synthesys X. synthesys.io/x now forwards to phedra.ai and the Chrome extension has been renamed Phedra X, so older reviews, screenshots and pricing pages describe a different brand.
