Pros & cons of Otherhalf
Otherhalf's pitch is a companion with a voice and an animated body rather than a text box, aimed squarely at anime fans. The free tier is enough to try the concept, but the character depth and customization people actually want sit behind the premium subscription.
Pros
- Real-time voice replies and animated 3D body language, not just text
- Available on web, iOS, and Android
- Free tier exists so the core idea can be tried before paying
- Backed by a funded company (Azimov) rather than a lone hobby project
Cons
- Deeper customization is locked behind a roughly $15/month subscription
- Anime-character focus narrows the audience by design
- Marketed around emotional connection, which some users may find uncomfortable
Best for
- Anime fans who want a voiced, animated AI character
- People who prefer a companion app with body language over plain chat
- Mobile users who want the app on iOS or Android, not just a browser
Not for
- Anyone looking for a general-purpose assistant
- Users uncomfortable with anime-styled companion apps
