Mosaic vs Runway

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Mosaic starts at $40, Runway at $12. Only Runway has a free tier. Both ship a public API.

What our research says

Mosaic

Mosaic is the rare AI video tool built for repetition rather than for one clip: a workflow you assemble once, trigger from a Drive folder, and let run over every new file. Per-tile credit rates are published down to the minute, which makes cost modelling possible. The catch is that those rates vary by two orders of magnitude — background removal costs 300 credits a minute against 6 for colour correction — so a plan's headline credit count says almost nothing until you know your tile mix.

Pros

  • Workflows trigger from Google Drive, S3, Dropbox or YouTube and post to social
  • Per-tile credit rates are published per input minute, so costs can be modelled
  • Exports to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve
  • HTTP API with webhooks plus an installable skill for coding agents
  • SOC2 Type 2 and GDPR compliance stated across all plans

Cons

  • No free tier — the entry plan is $40/month on an annual commitment
  • Tile rates vary hugely, so credit counts are hard to translate into output
  • Admin dashboard, RBAC and audit logs are enterprise-only
  • Credits do not roll over between months

Runway

One of the few AI video vendors with a full pipeline — generation, editing, upscaling, API — rather than a single model demo, and its film-industry adoption is real. The catch is credit economics: high-resolution generations drain a month's allowance quickly, so the advertised entry price rarely reflects working costs.

Pros

  • Gen-4.5 delivers strong motion consistency and prompt adherence
  • Studio, mobile apps and API cover creation through delivery
  • Max tier exports ProRes and 16-bit HDR for professional finishing
  • Long operating history (since 2018) compared with newer video startups

Cons

  • Credit-metered pricing makes real monthly cost hard to predict
  • Premium models and formats sit behind the more expensive tiers
  • The free plan is effectively a one-time demo
