Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Descript starts at $16, Mosaic at $40. Only Descript has a free tier. Both ship a public API.

What our research says

Descript

Descript is the right tool when your footage is people talking and you would rather edit a document than a timeline. Anyone cutting to music, working frame-accurate, or grading footage will fight it the whole way.

Pros

  • Transcript-first editing genuinely collapses the time to a rough cut for spoken content
  • Studio Sound rescues bad room audio well enough to skip a re-record
  • The API is included with any paid plan rather than sold as a separate tier
  • One project holds recording, editing, captions, translation and publishing

Cons

  • Two independent meters, media hours and AI credits, so either can strand you mid-month
  • The API cannot export a media file directly, you still download through the app
  • Entry paid tier is single-seat and capped at 10 media hours
  • Free tier watermarks exports, so it is a demo rather than a usable tier

Mosaic

Mosaic is the rare AI video tool built for repetition rather than for one clip: a workflow you assemble once, trigger from a Drive folder, and let run over every new file. Per-tile credit rates are published down to the minute, which makes cost modelling possible. The catch is that those rates vary by two orders of magnitude — background removal costs 300 credits a minute against 6 for colour correction — so a plan's headline credit count says almost nothing until you know your tile mix.

Pros

  • Workflows trigger from Google Drive, S3, Dropbox or YouTube and post to social
  • Per-tile credit rates are published per input minute, so costs can be modelled
  • Exports to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve
  • HTTP API with webhooks plus an installable skill for coding agents
  • SOC2 Type 2 and GDPR compliance stated across all plans

Cons

  • No free tier — the entry plan is $40/month on an annual commitment
  • Tile rates vary hugely, so credit counts are hard to translate into output
  • Admin dashboard, RBAC and audit logs are enterprise-only
  • Credits do not roll over between months

Which one fits

Choose Descript if you need

  • Podcasters and interview shows where the edit is driven by what was said
  • Course, demo and webinar recordings that need a fast, clean pass
  • Teams with no trained editor who still have to ship weekly video
  • Automating repetitive transcribe-clean-caption pipelines through the API

Choose Mosaic if you need

  • teams cutting the same format repeatedly from long-form footage
  • agencies automating vertical repurposing at volume
  • developers driving edits from an API or an agent skill
