What our research says

Luminance

Luminance is one of the longest-running contract AI vendors, and its strength is breadth across a portfolio: pointing it at thousands of agreements to find the clauses that deviate, the obligations nobody tracked and the paper that needs redoing. The negotiation product is the newer bet and competes with Harvey, Spellbook and the Word-native tools, so a team that mainly wants help drafting one contract at a time should compare on that use alone. It is an enterprise sale with no public price, a proof-of-value stage and a procurement cycle to match; small firms will find the entry bar high.

Pros

  • Portfolio-wide analysis finds anomalies and obligations across thousands of contracts, not one file at a time
  • Negotiate applies the company's own playbook and precedent during a live redline
  • Automate covers intake-to-signature workflow, so review, approval and signing stay in one system
  • A decade-old company spun out of Cambridge with a registered UK entity and stated use by 1,000+ enterprises

Cons

  • No public pricing, trial or self-serve path; evaluation goes through sales and a proof-of-value stage
  • Deployment options, integrations and any API are not described on the public site
  • Named customers and case studies are thin on the public pages, so claims rest on the vendor's own figures
  • Newer negotiation features face strong Word-native competition that may suit smaller teams better

Spellbook

Spellbook wins on the thing that decides legal-tech adoption: it lives in Word, where the lawyers already are, instead of asking them to move. The cost of that is a sales process and a price you cannot check before you engage.

Pros

  • Native Word add-in means near-zero behaviour change for the people who have to use it
  • Benchmarks against both market norms and the firm's own precedent, not just generic templates
  • Well capitalised: $50M Series B led by Khosla in October 2025 plus $40M debt in March 2026
  • 7-day free trial is available without going through procurement

Cons

  • No published pricing at any tier, so budgeting requires a sales conversation
  • No API, which blocks integration into an existing contract lifecycle system
  • Priced per seat, so cost scales with headcount rather than contract volume
  • The vendor is now actively acquiring competitors, so the product surface may shift

Which one fits

  • In-house legal and procurement teams reviewing contracts at volume, from due diligence to repapering
  • Enterprises that want negotiation, portfolio analysis and workflow under one vendor
  • Organisations in regulated or multi-jurisdiction settings that need a UK-based vendor with an established track record

Choose Spellbook if you need

  • Small and mid-size firms and in-house teams doing high contract volume in Word
  • Practices with an existing precedent bank worth benchmarking drafts against
  • Teams that want redlining suggestions in the document rather than in a separate portal
