What our research says

LM Studio

The easiest graphical way to try open models on a laptop or workstation, with a built-in model browser, chat window and local API server. Bionic extends it into an agent, which is useful if you want open models to do real work, though it is newer than the core app. Teams that need centralized controls will have to wait for the organization plans that are still being rolled out.

Pros

  • Free for personal and work use with local models
  • Runs llama.cpp and MLX engines with a simple model browser
  • Local API server plus CLI and JS and Python SDKs
  • Cloud tier states zero data retention and US hosting

Cons

  • Closed-source desktop app, unlike some local-model runners
  • Large models still need a lot of memory and a good GPU or Apple Silicon
  • Bionic cloud plans are new and usage limits are described only loosely

PyGPT

PyGPT is a genuinely free, open-source alternative to paying for a hosted AI chat subscription, as long as you are comfortable supplying your own API keys and doing a bit of setup. It supports far more providers and local-model options than a typical single-vendor desktop client, at the cost of a less polished, more configuration-heavy experience.

Pros

  • No subscription cost, free and open source under the MIT license
  • Connects to many providers plus local Ollama models in one client
  • Includes vision, code execution, and basic agent modes beyond plain chat

Cons

  • Requires users to obtain and pay for their own model API keys separately
  • Configuration-heavy compared to a single-vendor hosted chat app
  • Maintained by one developer, so support depends on community and documentation rather than a company

Which one fits

Choose LM Studio if you need

  • Developers testing open-weight models behind an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint
  • Privacy-conscious users who want chat and documents to stay on their own computer

Choose PyGPT if you need

  • Developers who already have API keys and want one desktop client for multiple providers
  • Privacy-conscious users who want to run local models via Ollama alongside cloud models
  • People who prefer open-source, self-hosted tools over subscription chat apps
