What our research says

MindWork AI Studio

A rare thing: a genuinely free cross-platform desktop chat client where you hold the keys and no subscription sits in the middle. The trade-off is that you handle provider accounts, billing and key hygiene yourself, and the licence is source-available rather than fully open.

Pros

  • No subscription, and free for commercial use as well
  • Wide provider coverage including local inference backends
  • Native builds for macOS, Windows and Linux
  • Source is on GitHub, with an open ERI spec for private data retrieval

Cons

  • You must obtain and manage an API key for every provider you use
  • FSL-1.1-MIT restricts competing commercial use until it converts to MIT
  • Single-user desktop only, with no hosted or mobile version

LM Studio

The easiest graphical way to try open models on a laptop or workstation, with a built-in model browser, chat window and local API server. Bionic extends it into an agent, which is useful if you want open models to do real work, though it is newer than the core app. Teams that need centralized controls will have to wait for the organization plans that are still being rolled out.

Pros

  • Free for personal and work use with local models
  • Runs llama.cpp and MLX engines with a simple model browser
  • Local API server plus CLI and JS and Python SDKs
  • Cloud tier states zero data retention and US hosting

Cons

  • Closed-source desktop app, unlike some local-model runners
  • Large models still need a lot of memory and a good GPU or Apple Silicon
  • Bionic cloud plans are new and usage limits are described only loosely

Which one fits

Choose MindWork AI Studio if you need

  • People already paying providers per token who want one client across all of them
  • Users mixing cloud models with local Ollama or llama.cpp runtimes
  • Organisations wanting desktop chat without routing data through a vendor's SaaS

Choose LM Studio if you need

  • Developers testing open-weight models behind an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint
  • Privacy-conscious users who want chat and documents to stay on their own computer
