Langtail vs PromptLayer

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Langtail starts at $99, PromptLayer at $49. Both have a free tier. Both ship a public API.

What our research says

Langtail

The useful idea is treating prompts like code that needs a test suite, and then handing the editing surface to people who do not write code. Cross-model replay makes swapping providers a measurable decision rather than a leap, and the firewall covers a risk most prompt tools ignore entirely. The step from free to 99 dollars a month is abrupt for a solo developer, and a Czech company of this size is a smaller bet than the observability platforms it competes with.

Pros

  • Spreadsheet-style prompt editing that non-developers can actually use
  • Test suites and validation runs against saved cases before deployment
  • Replay across models and parameter settings for direct comparison
  • AI Firewall screens for prompt injection and unsafe output
  • Typed TypeScript SDK plus OpenAPI, and a self-hosting option

Cons

  • Only one intermediate tier: free, then 99, then 499 dollars a month plus VAT
  • No pricing anywhere on the marketing pages, only on the plan page
  • Small vendor, and the company gives its details only inside the privacy policy
  • Prices are quoted excluding VAT, so the EU figure is higher than the sticker

PromptLayer

The right pick when the people who actually own your prompt wording are product or domain experts rather than engineers; if prompts live in git and only engineers touch them, Langfuse or Braintrust cover the same ground with less product surface.

Pros

  • Visual prompt editing plus deployment approvals is a genuine differentiator over log-only observability tools
  • Free tier includes 5 users and eval executions, not just request logging
  • Prompts are fetched at runtime via SDK or REST, so no redeploy is needed to change one
  • HIPAA with BAA and flexible hosting are offered on enterprise, which most prompt tools skip

Cons

  • The jump from Pro at $49/month to Team at $500/month is a tenfold step with no tier between
  • Free tier caps at 2,500 requests/month, which a modest production app exhausts quickly
  • Runtime prompt fetching puts a third party in your request path unless you cache
  • Crowded category — Langfuse, Braintrust and LangSmith all overlap heavily

Which one fits

Choose Langtail if you need

  • Teams where product or support staff own prompt wording, not just engineers
  • Anyone comparing the same prompt across providers before committing
  • Deployments that need prompt-injection screening at runtime

Choose PromptLayer if you need

  • Teams letting PMs, content or domain experts edit production prompts without a deploy
  • Regression-testing prompt changes against a labelled dataset before rollout
  • Tracing a bad production output back to the exact prompt version and cost
