What our research says

Hex

Hex fits data teams that write SQL and Python and want one place to explore, publish dashboards and give the rest of the company governed self-serve answers. A solo user who needs a quick spreadsheet-style chat over a CSV, or a company with no warehouse, will pay for much more than it uses.

Pros

  • SQL, Python and no-code cells in one reactive notebook
  • Analyses publish directly as dashboards and interactive apps
  • Agent answers are grounded in curated context with evals and spend observability
  • MCP server and REST APIs connect it to other tools and assistants

Cons

  • Per-editor pricing climbs quickly for larger teams; viewer-type Explorer seats are an Enterprise add-on
  • Larger compute profiles and GPUs cost extra per minute
  • SSO, audit logs and BYOK for model keys require Enterprise

MinusX

MinusX is worth a look for startups that want a self-hostable BI tool where the agent can build dashboards, alerts and reports instead of just answering one-off questions. The open-source route is free, but the cloud pricing is shown in several ways, so confirm the per-user rate before committing.

Pros

  • Free self-hosted edition with optional bring-your-own LLM keys
  • Agent learns business definitions and stores them in an editable knowledge base
  • Evals let you test whether answers stay correct as definitions change
  • SOC 2 Type II and GDPR are listed in the footer

Cons

  • Licence statements conflict: the repository carries AGPL-3.0 while the pricing FAQ says Apache 2.0
  • Cloud pricing is shown inconsistently across the page and its meta description
  • Small public community: the GitHub repository had only a few dozen stars at the time of research

Which one fits

Choose Hex if you need

  • Data teams that move from ad-hoc notebooks to shared dashboards and apps
  • Companies on Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks that want governed self-serve analytics
  • Analysts who mix SQL, Python and charts in one document

Choose MinusX if you need

  • Founders and small teams without a dedicated analyst
  • Teams that want to self-host BI and keep their warehouse in their own environment
  • Companies that want metric definitions captured in a shared knowledge base
