What our research says

Hex

Hex fits data teams that write SQL and Python and want one place to explore, publish dashboards and give the rest of the company governed self-serve answers. A solo user who needs a quick spreadsheet-style chat over a CSV, or a company with no warehouse, will pay for much more than it uses.

Pros

  • SQL, Python and no-code cells in one reactive notebook
  • Analyses publish directly as dashboards and interactive apps
  • Agent answers are grounded in curated context with evals and spend observability
  • MCP server and REST APIs connect it to other tools and assistants

Cons

  • Per-editor pricing climbs quickly for larger teams; viewer-type Explorer seats are an Enterprise add-on
  • Larger compute profiles and GPUs cost extra per minute
  • SSO, audit logs and BYOK for model keys require Enterprise

Livedocs

Livedocs sits between a BI tool and a Jupyter notebook: you ask in English, it writes the SQL and the chart, and the notebook stays inspectable rather than becoming a black box. Compute tiers rather than seat counts drive the price, which is honest for analytical work. Watch the second meter — AI usage is billed on top of the plan once the $5 credit is gone.

Pros

  • Free tier is permanent, with three notebooks and real compute
  • Generates SQL, charts and dashboards from plain-language questions
  • Compute is stated per tier in RAM and vCPUs rather than left vague
  • Pro adds scheduling, a terminal and collaboration on all data sources

Cons

  • AI usage is metered separately once the $5 credit runs out
  • Free and Builder tiers are restricted to basic data sources
  • Extra Pro members cost $20 each on top of the $30 base
  • No public API documentation

Which one fits

Choose Hex if you need

  • Data teams that move from ad-hoc notebooks to shared dashboards and apps
  • Companies on Snowflake, BigQuery or Databricks that want governed self-serve analytics
  • Analysts who mix SQL, Python and charts in one document

Choose Livedocs if you need

  • analysts who want generated SQL they can read and edit
  • small teams replacing ad-hoc spreadsheets with shared notebooks
  • scheduled reporting on connected warehouses
