Still the default for catching mistakes inside other people's software, but the free tier has quietly become an AI-prompt meter and the honest price is $30 unless you commit to a full year.

Pros

  • Runs inside the apps people already write in rather than as a separate editor
  • Free tier still covers spelling, grammar and tone detection with no time limit
  • Pro folds in plagiarism and AI-text detection that rivals charge for separately

Cons

  • The $12 headline is the annual rate; paying monthly costs $30
  • Free AI allowance is 100 prompts a month and depletes quickly
  • No public API, so it cannot be embedded in another product
  • Enterprise pricing is not published anywhere on the site

Scraib.app

Scraib's whole value is the keyboard shortcut — select text anywhere on a Mac, hit Control-R, and get a rewrite without copy-pasting into a separate app. Being a solo-developer product, the $3.99 monthly fee is reasonable, but the site itself was intermittently unreachable during research, which is worth checking before paying.

Pros

  • One shortcut works across 20+ different Mac apps instead of a separate tool per app
  • Supports a local Ollama model, so text never has to leave the machine
  • Lets a user bring their own API key for a flat one-time fee instead of a recurring one

Cons

  • Mac-only, with no Windows or web version
  • Built and maintained by one developer, with no larger company behind it
  • The main site returned server errors more than once during this review

Which one fits

Choose Grammarly if you need

  • Anyone writing in a browser, Word or email who wants corrections in place
  • Teams enforcing a house style guide across people who are not writers
  • Non-native English speakers who want fluency rewrites, not just error flags

Choose Scraib.app if you need

  • Mac users who write across many different apps and want one rewrite shortcut everywhere
  • People who prefer running a local Ollama model for privacy over cloud AI
  • Anyone who dislikes copying text into a separate AI chat window to fix it
