Overview

About Darktrace

Darktrace builds a behavioural model of each organisation's own environment — devices, accounts, mail flow, cloud workloads — and flags what deviates from it instead of matching known signatures, which is how it claims to catch novel and zero-day activity before a CVE is public. Its response layer can contain a suspicious session on its own, with configurable policies for when it may intervene, either natively or through your firewalls, EDR, SOAR and ITSM tools. The product lines today are Secure AI, Email and Hybrid Network, sold to more than 10,000 customers by Darktrace Holdings Limited, a Cambridge, UK company that began in 2013 and was taken private by Thoma Bravo in October 2024. Pricing is quote-only after a demo or in-environment evaluation.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Darktrace

medium confidence

Darktrace is the name most buyers mean by anomaly-based detection, and the autonomous response is the genuine differentiator: it acts on behaviour the vendor has never seen a signature for. The cost of that approach is tuning — a self-learning model needs weeks to settle and a team that will review what it flags, or the response policies get switched off. Mid-size and large estates with a staffed SOC get the value; small teams tend to pay for a console nobody watches.

Pros

  • Detection is based on each organisation's own baseline, so it does not depend on signature updates
  • Autonomous response can contain a session natively or through firewalls, EDR, SOAR and ITSM integrations
  • One platform spans network, email, cloud, OT, identity and AI-tool usage
  • Over 10,000 customers and 2,300+ staff; stable private ownership under Thoma Bravo since 2024

Cons

  • No public pricing; everything goes through a demo and a sales quote
  • Behavioural models need a learning period and ongoing tuning to keep false positives down
  • Taken private at $5.3bn, so financials and roadmap are no longer disclosed publicly
  • API and integration details are not described on the product pages

Best for

  • Organisations with a SOC that can tune and act on behavioural alerts
  • Estates mixing on-premises, cloud, OT and email where signature tools leave gaps
  • Security teams that want machine-speed containment with policy limits on what it may do

Not for

  • Small companies without a dedicated security function to review alerts
  • Buyers who need a public price or a self-serve purchase

Watch out: Budget for the people, not just the licence: the detection and the autonomous response only pay off if someone reviews the model's decisions, and a quote that covers several modules can climb quickly with estate size.
