Overview

About CoreStory

CoreStory ingests a company's source code and builds a persistent Code Intelligence Model of architecture, dependencies, workflows, business rules and APIs, so that understanding is kept rather than rebuilt in every AI chat session. From that model it produces architecture overviews, technical user stories, sequence and UML diagrams and API specifications, answers natural-language questions through Chat with Your Code, and serves the same context to AI coding agents over MCP and an API. It is aimed at long-lived enterprise systems: legacy modernization, maintenance and developer onboarding. The company, formerly Crowdbotics, raised a $32 million Series A in October 2025 and bills usage in its own CoreStory Intelligence Units.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of CoreStory

medium confidence

CoreStory targets large, old codebases that no single engineer fully understands any more, and its MCP and API hook gives coding agents real architectural context instead of only the files in view. A free Discover tier now lets an individual developer ingest a codebase and try it, but the Pro tier and every price are behind a sales conversation, so budgeting for team use means talking to the vendor first.

Pros

  • Persistent model of architecture, workflows and business rules instead of per-session context
  • Exposes that context to AI coding agents through MCP and an API
  • Generates diagrams, technical user stories and API specs directly from source
  • Free-forever Discover tier to test on a real codebase

Cons

  • No public prices; CIU usage is hard to estimate before a sales conversation
  • Free tier limits exports and sharing of generated documentation
  • The site shows mixed signals, with a waitlist page for a free individual plan alongside a live free-start sign-up

Best for

  • Enterprises modernizing or maintaining legacy systems with sparse documentation
  • Teams that want Claude Code, Copilot or similar agents to query shared architectural context over MCP
  • Architects and new hires ramping up on an unfamiliar codebase

Not for

  • Small teams that need a published per-seat or per-month price before trying a paid plan
  • Developers looking for a tool that writes code itself, since CoreStory generates specs and context, not code

Watch out: Usage is metered in CoreStory Intelligence Units across ingestion, chat and MCP queries, and the vendor does not publish what a unit costs.
