What our research says

Claude

The one to pick if your work is long documents or code; for casual chat the free tier is fine and the paid seat mostly buys headroom rather than new abilities.

Pros

  • Long-context handling is the reason most people switch to it
  • Same models reachable from chat, desktop app and API
  • Free tier is a usable product rather than a token trial
  • Annual billing brings the Pro seat down to $17/mo

Cons

  • Pro usage limits bite during sustained coding work
  • The step above Pro is $100/mo Max, a five-fold jump
  • No image generation, unlike most rivals at the same price
  • claude.ai blocks automated access, so scripted use has to go via the API

Mistral Vibe

The reason to choose Vibe over ChatGPT or Claude is where it is run from, not what it does: a European vendor, a European legal home and a plan that is a few dollars cheaper than the competition. Feature by feature it is a competent second-tier assistant, and the rename to Vibe folds the chat product into a coding-and-agent push that may or may not suit someone who only wanted a chatbot.

Pros

  • European vendor with the Pro tier at $14.99, below the $20 standard elsewhere
  • One subscription spans chat, deep research, 100+ connectors and a coding mode with CLI and VS Code extension
  • Web search and image generation are available on the free plan
  • MCP support and open-weight models from the same lab make it easy to move work between the assistant and your own stack

Cons

  • Raw model quality still trails the top US labs on the hardest tasks
  • The Le Chat to Vibe rename and three-mode split add confusion for people who wanted a chatbot
  • Pricing page shows monthly rates only and excludes taxes, so the EU price in practice is higher
  • Team plan is per user with a stated storage cap, and Enterprise terms are quote-only

Which one fits

Choose Claude if you need

  • Developers working through large codebases or using Claude Code
  • Anyone reading and reasoning over long documents, contracts or papers
  • Users who want a desktop app that reaches local data through MCP

Choose Mistral Vibe if you need

  • European companies and public bodies that want a capable assistant from an EU vendor
  • Developers who want chat, a coding CLI and a VS Code extension under one subscription
  • Price-sensitive users, since Pro is $14.99 against $20 at the big US rivals
