What our research says

Claude

The one to pick if your work is long documents or code; for casual chat the free tier is fine and the paid seat mostly buys headroom rather than new abilities.

Pros

  • Long-context handling is the reason most people switch to it
  • Same models reachable from chat, desktop app and API
  • Free tier is a usable product rather than a token trial
  • Annual billing brings the Pro seat down to $17/mo

Cons

  • Pro usage limits bite during sustained coding work
  • The step above Pro is $100/mo Max, a five-fold jump
  • No image generation, unlike most rivals at the same price
  • claude.ai blocks automated access, so scripted use has to go via the API

Grok

Grok's distinctive asset is the firehose: live X posts plus web search, so for 'what is happening right now' questions it is often the quickest read. As a general assistant it is competitive rather than clearly ahead, and the subscription ladder has been reshuffled several times in 2026 with the vendor's own pricing page hidden behind bot protection, so check the in-app price before you commit.

Pros

  • Live search over X and the web rather than a stale index
  • Image and short video generation with sound inside the same app
  • Voice mode and deep research included in consumer plans
  • API models with 500k to 1M context at list prices below most frontier rivals
  • Free tier exists on web, X and mobile

Cons

  • Plan names and prices changed repeatedly in 2026: Lite, SuperGrok, Plus and Heavy at $10, $30, $100 and $300
  • The vendor's website blocks automated access, so published terms are hard to verify
  • API requests with 200k or more prompt tokens bill every token at double the rate
  • Seller of record in the App Store is X Corp. while the copyright is xAI Inc., which muddles who you contract with
