What our research says

ArtBot

The most complete free Stable Diffusion front-end that asks nothing of you - no signup, no card, no credits. What you trade is predictability: jobs queue against volunteer GPUs, so speed varies with who happens to be sharing hardware. Fine for experimenting, wrong for a deadline.

Pros

  • Genuinely free with no registration step
  • Covers ControlNet, image-to-image, inpainting and live painting, not just prompt-to-image
  • Image interrogation for reverse-engineering prompts from an existing picture
  • Source is open on GitHub, so behaviour is auditable

Cons

  • Generation speed depends on volunteer GPU availability, which fluctuates
  • No commercial support - it is one developer's project
  • No API of its own; automation means talking to AI Horde directly
  • Model selection is bounded by what Horde workers have loaded

Playground

A decent middle ground if you want frontier image models without paying each vendor separately, but it is a design shortcut, not a design tool — anyone who needs real layer control will outgrow it fast.

Pros

  • One subscription fronts several current image models instead of separate vendor bills
  • Commercial licence is granted on the free tier, not held back for paid users
  • Free tier is usable for evaluation at roughly 10 images per three hours
  • Editing utilities (upscale, background removal, AI extend) are bundled, not add-ons

Cons

  • Free credits are token — 3 per month — so any real use forces the paid step
  • Output resolution is tiered: 2048x2048 on Pro, 3840x2160 only on Pro Plus at $36/month
  • No self-serve developer API; the pricing page only mentions API eligibility at the top tier
  • Mobile app is iOS-only, with no Android build

Which one fits

Choose ArtBot if you need

  • Trying Stable Diffusion without creating an account
  • Experimenting with ControlNet and inpainting for free
  • People who want an open-source client they can inspect or self-host

Choose Playground if you need

  • Solo founders making logos, stickers and merch mockups without a designer
  • Social media managers who want on-brand posters from a template rather than a blank prompt box
  • Testing several image models side by side on the same brief
