What our research says

Anathema AI

Anathema AI's pitch for its chatbot Lexi is that it takes clear positions on contested topics rather than deflecting, a deliberate contrast with mainstream chatbots' content policies. It's a one-developer, no-investor operation running its own infrastructure rather than wrapping another vendor's model, which is unusual for a project this size. That same 'takes a position' pitch is also exactly what will make some of its answers land badly for some users — it's a design choice, not a neutral feature.

Pros

  • Runs its own infrastructure rather than being a thin wrapper on another vendor's API
  • Free tier (10 messages/day) requires no credit card
  • States conversations aren't fed into third-party model training

Cons

  • A solo, self-funded operation carries more continuity risk than a funded company
  • Taking positions on contested topics will produce answers some users find objectionable, which is the stated design, not a bug

Grok

Grok's distinctive asset is the firehose: live X posts plus web search, so for 'what is happening right now' questions it is often the quickest read. As a general assistant it is competitive rather than clearly ahead, and the subscription ladder has been reshuffled several times in 2026 with the vendor's own pricing page hidden behind bot protection, so check the in-app price before you commit.

Pros

  • Live search over X and the web rather than a stale index
  • Image and short video generation with sound inside the same app
  • Voice mode and deep research included in consumer plans
  • API models with 500k to 1M context at list prices below most frontier rivals
  • Free tier exists on web, X and mobile

Cons

  • Plan names and prices changed repeatedly in 2026: Lite, SuperGrok, Plus and Heavy at $10, $30, $100 and $300
  • The vendor's website blocks automated access, so published terms are hard to verify
  • API requests with 200k or more prompt tokens bill every token at double the rate
  • Seller of record in the App Store is X Corp. while the copyright is xAI Inc., which muddles who you contract with

Which one fits

Choose Anathema AI if you need

  • Users specifically frustrated by mainstream chatbots' refusals or hedging on contested topics
  • Anyone curious about a small, independently-run alternative to the major chatbot vendors

Choose Grok if you need

  • People who live on X and want trending posts folded into answers
  • Users who want image, video and voice generation in one consumer subscription
  • Developers who want 500k to 1M-token context models at $1.25 to $2 per million input tokens
