Semantic Scholar is a scholarly search engine run by Ai2, the non-profit Allen Institute for AI, and has been open since 2015. It indexes more than 237 million papers across every field, extracts citations and figures, and generates one-line TLDR summaries so you can triage a result list without opening each PDF. Semantic Reader overlays citation cards on the paper itself. There is no paid tier: the Academic Graph API and the S2ORC full-text corpus are published free for developers, which is why a lot of other literature tools quietly sit on top of it.

Pros & cons of Semantic Scholar
The most useful free academic search on the open web, and the only one that also hands you its corpus and its API. Coverage is broad but metadata quality varies by publisher, so it will not replace Scopus or Web of Science for a systematic review. Treat the TLDR summaries as triage, not as a reading substitute.
