Pismo

The whole value is that it works where you already are: no tab switch, no paste, just select and press a key in whatever application you happen to be in. Custom prompts bound to hotkeys make repeated editing passes cheap. It is a thin layer over a model, priced accordingly, and the euro pricing with unlimited requests is unusually simple.

  • Works in any macOS or Windows application via a system-wide hotkey
  • Rewrite, tone change, expand, shorten, translate and proofread from one selection
  • Custom prompts saveable and bindable to their own shortcuts
  • Unlimited requests and unlimited devices on both plans
  • Vendor states it does not store or process the texts you send

Cons

  • No free tier — only a one-week trial
  • Requires an internet connection, so nothing works offline
  • Priced in euros, so the dollar cost moves with the exchange rate
  • No API, no browser extension and no Linux build
  • A small studio-backed product with a thin public track record

Wordtune

Wordtune still does the one thing it was built for better than the general assistants do, but its owner is in visible trouble and the product has not shipped news in two years. Cheap and useful today, risky as a dependency.

Pros

  • Rewrites preserve intent instead of paraphrasing into something else, which is the whole point
  • In-place browser extension avoids the copy-paste round trip
  • Cheapest tier is under $5 a month on annual billing

Cons

  • Parent AI21 Labs is in financial distress: a $300M round never closed, acquisition talks with NVIDIA and then Nebius, and reported layoffs above 60%
  • The product blog has not been updated since June 2024 and the site footer still reads 2025
  • AI21's own site no longer mentions Wordtune anywhere, suggesting it is no longer a strategic product
  • Free tier's 10 rewrites a day is exhausted in a single editing session
