What our research says

KAI KeyboardAI

A keyboard is the right shape for this problem — you rewrite the message where you are typing it instead of copying into a chat app and back. KAI does that, cheaply. The problem is age: the last update was November 2023, and an AI product frozen for that long is running on whatever model it shipped with.

Pros

  • Works system-wide as an iOS keyboard, in any app
  • Free to install with a one-off All Access unlock rather than a heavy subscription
  • Ships English, Russian and Ukrainian support
  • Named developer with a live App Store listing

Cons

  • No update since version 2.1 in November 2023
  • Billing period on the $4.99 and $39.99 purchases is not stated anywhere
  • Rated 18+, which blocks it for school-age users
  • Third-party keyboards need full access, meaning what you type can leave the device

Wordtune

Wordtune still does the one thing it was built for better than the general assistants do, but its owner is in visible trouble and the product has not shipped news in two years. Cheap and useful today, risky as a dependency.

Pros

  • Rewrites preserve intent instead of paraphrasing into something else, which is the whole point
  • In-place browser extension avoids the copy-paste round trip
  • Cheapest tier is under $5 a month on annual billing

Cons

  • Parent AI21 Labs is in financial distress: a $300M round never closed, acquisition talks with NVIDIA and then Nebius, and reported layoffs above 60%
  • The product blog has not been updated since June 2024 and the site footer still reads 2025
  • AI21's own site no longer mentions Wordtune anywhere, suggesting it is no longer a strategic product
  • Free tier's 10 rewrites a day is exhausted in a single editing session

Which one fits

Choose KAI KeyboardAI if you need

  • Rewriting messages in place on iPhone
  • Non-native English speakers drafting on mobile
  • People who want AI writing without a separate app

Choose Wordtune if you need

  • Non-native English writers who need a sentence to read naturally, not be rewritten wholesale
  • Anyone editing inside Gmail, Docs or LinkedIn who wants suggestions in place
  • Light users, since the free tier is genuinely usable for occasional rewriting
