What our research says

MindMeister

An old, stable mind-mapping tool with a free tier that keeps the features most vendors strip out: real-time collaboration, templates, presentation mode and AI generation all work without paying. The cap is on map count, three, which is a demo rather than a usable allowance. A German legal entity, EU hosting and ISO 27001 make it an easy sell to a compliance team.

Pros

  • Free plan keeps collaboration, presentation mode and AI generation instead of stripping them
  • Real-time editing with unlimited collaborators on every tier
  • Exports to PDF, Word and PowerPoint for people who do not use the tool
  • Running since 2007, with EU hosting, ISO 27001 certification and a published German legal entity

Cons

  • Free plan caps you at three maps, which is a trial rather than a tier
  • Per-user pricing adds up across a team compared with general whiteboard tools
  • Attachments are limited to two per map below the Pro tier
  • No documented public API

Whimsical Mind Maps

This feature is a fast way to get past the blank-canvas problem when starting a mind map: type an idea, get a branched structure, then edit it like any other Whimsical board. It's a generator bolted onto an existing whiteboard tool rather than a dedicated mind-mapping app, so power users of pure mind-mapping software may still miss features built specifically for that format.

Pros

  • Generates a fully branched map from a single typed prompt
  • Output stays fully editable afterward, not a locked image
  • Lives inside a broader tool that also does flowcharts, wireframes, and docs
  • Desktop apps for macOS and Windows in addition to the browser

Cons

  • Free-tier exports carry a watermark until you upgrade
  • Mind mapping is one feature inside a general diagramming tool, not a dedicated product
  • Company's headquarters location isn't stated on its own site

Which one fits

Choose MindMeister if you need

  • teams brainstorming together in real time
  • people who present their maps rather than just filing them
  • EU organisations that need hosting and a legal entity inside the bloc

Choose Whimsical Mind Maps if you need

  • Brainstorming sessions that need a starting structure fast
  • Teams already using Whimsical for flowcharts or wireframes who want mind maps in the same place
  • Generating a few structural variations of an idea before picking one to refine
