What our research says

LIA

LIA works inside Ableton Live to sketch MIDI parts from a text description, which is useful for producers who want a fast starting point without losing the ability to edit every note. It's tied to Ableton for its deeper features right now, and pricing climbs quickly once you go past the entry tier.

Pros

  • generates editable MIDI instead of locked audio
  • direct Ableton Live Bridge integration
  • free tier available with no Ableton integration required

Cons

  • deep integration limited to Ableton Live only
  • price jumps quickly from the Starter to the Pro tier
  • native mobile and Mac apps are still in development

Magenta Studio

Still the easiest way to put research-grade generative MIDI inside a real DAW workflow, and it costs nothing. It generates MIDI only — no audio — the models predate the current wave of music AI, and you need Ableton Live Suite, which is a significant paid prerequisite.

Pros

  • Free and Apache-2.0 open source, with the repo still receiving pushes in 2026
  • Five focused tools that slot into existing MIDI clip workflows
  • Groove/Drumify timing trained on real drummer performances
  • No cloud dependency for your session's MIDI data

Cons

  • Requires Ableton Live 10.1 Suite or newer for the plugin
  • Models are older research work; output needs curation
  • Standalone versions are explicitly no longer maintained

Which one fits

Choose LIA if you need

  • Ableton Live users wanting quick MIDI sketches
  • producers who want to keep editing AI-generated parts
  • solo musicians short on arrangement ideas

Choose Magenta Studio if you need

  • Ableton producers wanting quick melodic or drum variations in-session
  • Beatmakers humanizing rigid programmed drums with Groove
  • Curious musicians trying ML composition without any spend
