What our research says

Kits AI

The one voice-conversion tool that took licensing seriously — artist models are opt-in and paid, so releases built on them are less likely to blow up legally. Post-Splice acquisition, expect the standalone product to keep running but the interesting roadmap to land inside Splice's own ecosystem.

Pros

  • Models trained on fully licensed data with an artist approval step before commercial release
  • Full vocal chain around conversion: stem split, remover, repair, generative vocals
  • Public API docs, rare in this category
  • Now backed by Splice, so funding and catalog access are no longer a risk

Cons

  • Free tier has zero download minutes — you can hear results but not keep them
  • Voice slots are gated by tier, so training several models pushes you to $30+
  • Professional cloning quality needs clean, well-recorded input; noisy takes convert badly
  • Acquisition means product direction now answers to Splice's roadmap

Voicemod

Still the default voice changer for Discord and stream setups, and the free tier is usable — but the company has stopped publishing prices, which is an odd thing for a consumer app to do.

Pros

  • Operates at the system audio level, so any application picks it up without integration
  • Free tier is genuinely usable, just on a rotating subset of voices
  • VoiceLab allows custom voices rather than presets alone

Cons

  • No pricing page on the site — the price only appears after installing
  • Windows and macOS only
  • Free tier rotates its voice selection and caps you at one soundboard
  • Real-time processing adds noticeable CPU load on weaker machines

Which one fits

Choose Kits AI if you need

  • Producers and songwriters replacing a scratch vocal with a usable take
  • Demo work where a topline needs to be heard in a different vocal register
  • Artists licensing their own voice model to fans under controlled terms
  • Teams wanting programmatic voice conversion via the documented API

Choose Voicemod if you need

  • Streamers and Discord users wanting effects across every app at once
  • Creators who need voice presets and a soundboard in the same overlay
  • Anyone building a character voice for VTubing or roleplay
