What our research says

Google Veo

Veo 3.1 is the video model to measure others against on sound: dialogue and effects come out of the same generation, so a clip is usable without a separate audio pass. The catch is access — you are choosing between a Google AI subscription metered in Flow credits and a per-second API bill where a single 8-second 4K clip on the Standard model costs nearly five dollars. Fine for finished shots, expensive for exploration unless you draft on Lite or Fast.

Pros

  • Audio — effects, ambience, dialogue — is generated natively with the video
  • 1080p and 4K output with reference-image and first/last-frame control
  • Three API price points (Lite, Fast, Standard) let you draft cheaply and render once
  • Reachable in the Gemini app, Flow, Vids, AI Studio and the Gemini API from one Google account

Cons

  • No free tier for the API; every Veo variant is paid-only
  • Per-second API billing: Standard 4K costs $0.60 a second
  • Consumer access is metered in Flow credits that vary by plan and region
  • Clips are short (benchmarks cite 8 seconds), so longer pieces need extension passes

Luma Agents

Luma has folded Dream Machine into Luma Agents, a canvas where one agent dispatches work to its own Ray and Uni models and to rivals' models, so you are buying a workflow more than a model. That suits teams producing campaign variations across formats, less so someone who just wants the best text-to-video clip, where credits per second add up fast at 1080p. The API is the cleaner buy for developers: per-generation prices, no subscription.

Pros

  • Own video models (Ray3.2, Ray3.14) and image model (Uni-1) plus third-party models in one workspace
  • Consistency tools for characters and brand assets across variations
  • API with published per-generation prices from $0.15 for a 540p five-second clip and no commitment on the Build plan
  • Audio generation, lip sync, transcription and captions built into the same canvas

Cons

  • No free plan listed on the pricing page, and the cheapest plan is $30 a month
  • Credits expire at the end of each month, and 1080p video costs 80 credits a second
  • The Dream Machine name and the iOS app have disappeared from the site, so older guides no longer match
  • The API's provisioned-throughput minimum is stated inconsistently (4 versus 8 units)

Which one fits

Choose Google Veo if you need

  • Marketing and social teams who need short clips with sound and no post-production
  • Developers adding video generation to a product through the Gemini API
  • Filmmakers prototyping in Flow with reference images and scene extension

Choose Luma Agents if you need

  • Creative teams producing many on-brand variations of video, image and audio from one brief
  • Agencies that want Ray, Veo, Kling and Seedance behind a single canvas and one bill
  • Developers who want Ray3.2 video and Uni-1.1 images through a pay-per-generation API
