What our research says

GitWit

A hackable, MIT-licensed way to study or self-host an AI coding IDE, with E2B sandboxes doing the heavy lifting. The catch is that it is a small community project, not a supported product, so expect rough edges and no guarantees.

Pros

  • MIT license with the full Turborepo codebase on GitHub
  • Multiple model providers supported instead of vendor lock-in
  • Sandboxed execution with live preview and one-click sharing
  • Zero product cost beyond your own API usage

Cons

  • Tiny community and low GitHub star count
  • Setup requires wiring several third-party keys
  • No commercial support or documented roadmap

Replit

Still the most complete build-and-ship-from-a-browser setup, and the new credit-free Free Mode makes everyday iteration cheaper than it was. The bill is still set by the agent, though: anything that needs the stronger models draws on a $20 balance on Core and then runs pay-as-you-go by effort.

  • Free Mode allowance refreshes every few hours on paid plans, so routine chat does not burn credits
  • Annual billing trims Core to $18 and Pro to $90

  • Core's $20 of model credits goes quickly on agent-heavy work
