What our research says

Gistly

It does one job well: the summary appears next to the player rather than in another tab, and the timestamps actually move the video. The problem is commercial opacity — you cannot see what the paid tier costs without entering a checkout flow, which is a poor way to ask for a card.

Pros

  • Summary widget renders inside the YouTube page, with no copy-pasting of URLs
  • Timestamped sections link back into the video at the right moment
  • Also generates full transcripts and blog-post drafts from the same video
  • Handles more than 40 languages

Cons

  • No published price list; the paid tier's cost is only visible inside checkout
  • Publisher is a bare name with no address, country or company registration
  • Entirely dependent on YouTube transcripts, so videos without them are out of scope

NoteGPT

A cheap way to compress videos and readings into study material, with a usable free tier to test output quality. The catch is that everything meaningful is metered — even the plan named Unlimited caps premium credits — and the many bundled tools vary in depth.

Pros

  • Free tier without a credit card to evaluate quality
  • Covers the whole pipeline from summary to flashcards to audio in one subscription
  • Browser extension summarizes videos in place on YouTube
  • Entry price of $9/month undercuts buying separate single-purpose tools

Cons

  • Credit and quota system applies across nearly every feature
  • Quality is uneven across its dozens of mini-tools
  • The company publishes no information about who runs it or where
