DiffusionBee

Still the least painful way to get Stable Diffusion running on a Mac without touching a terminal, and nothing leaves your disk. But no release has shipped since August 2024, so treat it as frozen-but-usable rather than a tool that will track new models.

Pros

  • Free and AGPL-3.0 licensed, with no credits, queues or watermarks
  • One-click install instead of a manual Python and dependency setup
  • Imports custom checkpoints and runs Flux on Apple silicon
  • Generation volume is capped only by your own GPU

Cons

  • Last GitHub release was 2.5.3 in August 2024 and the repo has been quiet since
  • macOS only; the Windows 64-bit build is still a waitlist
  • Intel Macs are supported but noticeably slower
  • No node graph or ControlNet-grade control, so power users outgrow it

InvokeAI

The most artist-friendly of the open local generation UIs, pairing a real layered canvas with node workflows and full privacy on your own hardware. The catch is that it is now a community-run project — the founding company effectively exited to Adobe — so support and release pace depend on volunteers.

Pros

  • Apache 2.0 license with no usage fees at all
  • Layered canvas plus node graph covers both artists and technicians
  • Runs fully local — nothing leaves your machine
  • Supports current open model families including Flux

Cons

  • Community maintenance since the 2025 Adobe move adds roadmap uncertainty
  • Installation and model management still demand technical comfort
  • No official hosted option remains for casual use
