ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the default general assistant and the one everyone else is measured against, but the tier you need is rarely the one you first buy. Free is now ad-supported, and the jump to genuinely unlimited reasoning is steep.

Pros

  • Broadest tool surface of any consumer assistant: browsing, code, images, voice, connectors
  • The $8 Go tier closed the gap between free and a $20 commitment
  • Apps on every desktop and mobile platform, not just a web wrapper
  • Model quality is consistently at or near the front of the field

Cons

  • Advertising now appears on the free and Go tiers
  • Message and reasoning limits are opaque and change without notice
  • Tier structure has churned repeatedly, so any price you quote ages fast
  • The API is a separate purchase, which surprises buyers who assume Plus includes it

Z.ai

Z.ai is worth knowing about mainly because of what's behind it: Zhipu AI is one of the few foundation-model companies with a public listing, and GLM's context window and agentic tool-use benchmark competitively against larger US labs. The free chat is a fine general assistant, but most of the value for developers sits in the metered API and coding subscription rather than the consumer chat page.

  • Free web chat with no signup friction for basic use
  • API pricing undercuts several Western foundation-model providers per token
  • 1M-token context window on the flagship GLM line

Cons

  • Company and data handling are based in China, which rules it out for some compliance policies
  • Model naming and version numbers change frequently, making comparisons harder to track
  • English-language documentation lags behind the Chinese-language originals in places

  • Anyone who wants file, image, voice and browsing input without assembling tools
