ChatGPT vs Poemly

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. ChatGPT publishes a starting price ($8); Poemly does not. Both have a free tier. Only ChatGPT ships a public API.

What our research says

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the default general assistant and the one everyone else is measured against, but the tier you need is rarely the one you first buy. Free is now ad-supported, and the jump to genuinely unlimited reasoning is steep.

Pros

  • Broadest tool surface of any consumer assistant: browsing, code, images, voice, connectors
  • The $8 Go tier closed the gap between free and a $20 commitment
  • Apps on every desktop and mobile platform, not just a web wrapper
  • Model quality is consistently at or near the front of the field

Cons

  • Advertising now appears on the free and Go tiers
  • Message and reasoning limits are opaque and change without notice
  • Tier structure has churned repeatedly, so any price you quote ages fast
  • The API is a separate purchase, which surprises buyers who assume Plus includes it

Poemly

Poemly is a focused, free poem generator that actually enforces the mechanics of the forms it offers, syllable counts and rhyme schemes included, rather than just producing free verse labeled with a form name. There's no paid tier at all, which is unusual for a generator this capable, so the business model behind keeping it free long-term isn't clear.

Pros

  • Enforces real formal constraints (syllables, rhyme scheme) rather than approximating them
  • Completely free with no account, card, or daily cap
  • Line-by-line editing and multiple export formats (text, file, image)

Cons

  • No account system, so there's no way to save or revisit past poems across sessions
  • No stated company name or business model, only a support address and a London contact point

Choose Poemly if you need

  • Writing a poem for a card, toast, or gift that follows a specific traditional form
  • Learning how forms like haiku or villanelle are structured through a live example
