Boolpic

Boolpic bundles several common single-purpose editing tasks — background swap, upscale, filter, animate — into one free toolkit backed by a funded video-AI company rather than a one-person side project. Direct verification was limited by an expired SSL certificate on the toolkit domain at research time, which is itself worth confirming before relying on the tool.

Pros

  • Combines background removal, upscaling, filters and photo animation in one free tool
  • Backed by an outside-funded company with a track record in AI video/image products
  • No download or account required to use it, per third-party descriptions

Cons

  • The toolkit domain returned an expired-certificate error during this research, which a browser would flag as unsafe
  • No pricing or feature details could be verified first-hand from the product page itself
  • The company's primary product line is video generation, so the free photo toolkit may see less ongoing investment

Pixlr

The cheapest way to get real layer editing plus generative fill without an Adobe subscription — under $3 a month buys what Photoshop charges ten times more for. The tradeoff is that the AI models are a generation behind and the free tier is ad-heavy enough to be irritating.

Pros

  • Entry paid tier at $1.99-$2.49 is one of the lowest in the category
  • Two apps in one: Pixlr E for pixel work, Pixlr X for fast template edits
  • Free tier is genuinely usable for basic edits, just ad-supported
  • Seventeen-plus years of continuity behind it, unusual for a browser editor

Cons

  • Generative credits are consumed fast and the Plus tier only carries 80 a month
  • Concurrency is throttled per tier — 1 generation at a time on Plus
  • Prices display in local currency, so the USD figure shifts by region
  • No API and no scripting, so batch work has to be done by hand
