What our research says

Blinkist

Blinkist is a mature product with a large, professionally-written summary catalog, a real advantage over AI tools that summarize on the fly and can miss nuance in a 300-page book. The AI tier for videos and articles is a bolt-on to that core catalog business rather than the main reason to use it, and annual-only pricing on Premium is a real commitment for something you might use in bursts.

Pros

  • Catalog of 6,500+ titles with professionally written summaries, not raw AI output
  • Both text and audio formats with offline mobile access
  • Free tier gives one full summary a day to try before paying

Cons

  • Full library access is annual billing, not an affordable month-to-month option
  • AI features for non-book content sit behind the pricier Pro tier

Gist

Gist does one narrow thing, cut an article down while keeping it readable, and does it inside the reading apps a user already has rather than a separate destination. At under a dollar a month it is a low-commitment way to save reading time, but it is iOS-only and has no free tier to test first.

Pros

  • Works as a share-sheet extension across Safari, Files, and other apps rather than a standalone reader
  • Aims to preserve structure and tone rather than flattening everything into bullet points
  • Very low price point ($0.99/month)

Cons

  • No free tier to test accuracy before subscribing
  • iOS only, no Android, web, or desktop version
  • Run by a single named individual rather than a company, so support continuity is less certain
