Use tool ↗About Appwrite
Appwrite is an open-source backend-as-a-service platform with more than 57,000 GitHub stars, founded in 2019 by Eldad Fux. It provides authentication, databases, file storage, serverless functions, messaging, realtime sync, site hosting and a firewall for web and mobile apps, with SDKs for React, Next.js, Flutter, React Native and more. It is not an AI model, but its databases now include VectorsDB, which stores embeddings and runs similarity search natively, alongside TablesDB, DocumentsDB and managed PostgreSQL or MySQL, and it ships an MCP server for coding agents. Cloud plans run from a free tier to Pro at $25 a month, with databases on serverless or dedicated compute, and the whole stack can be self-hosted.

Pros & cons of Appwrite
Appwrite is a mature, open-source backend platform rather than an AI product itself, and it has grown into a credible data layer for AI apps: VectorsDB now handles embeddings and similarity search next to auth, functions and storage, so a small RAG or agent project no longer needs a separate vector store. Teams with very large vector workloads or exotic retrieval needs will still compare it against a dedicated vector database.
Pros
- Open-source with a large GitHub community, so self-hosting is a real option
- Covers auth, databases, storage, functions, and realtime in one platform instead of five
- Native VectorsDB for embeddings and similarity search, plus an MCP server for coding agents
- Free tier is usable for real small projects, not just a demo
Cons
- Production usage at scale requires ongoing spend, and dedicated database compute is billed on top of Pro
- The pricing model now spans plan fees, overage and per-database compute tiers, which takes work to forecast
Best for
- Developers who want one backend (auth, database, storage, functions) instead of assembling several services
- Teams building AI agents or RAG apps that want vector search in the same backend as app data
- Projects wanting an open-source, self-hostable option instead of a closed platform
Not for
- Non-technical users, since this is developer infrastructure, not an end-user tool
- Retrieval-heavy products that need the tuning knobs of a specialist vector database
Watch out: Pro keeps running past its limits and bills overage, so set the organisation budget cap before launch to avoid a surprise invoice.
