Use tool ↗About AIGNE DocSmith
AIGNE DocSmith is a documentation generator built on ArcBlock's AIGNE agent framework. It installs as a command-line tool, reads a codebase, and drafts a structured, navigable, searchable documentation site, including architecture diagrams, flowcharts, and data models generated from the code rather than written by hand. It can detect which parts of a codebase changed since the last run and update only the affected documentation pages instead of regenerating everything, and it publishes in 12 or more languages. The tool is source-available under the Elastic License 2.0 and free to self-host; it connects to an LLM through ArcBlock's AIGNE Hub or a user-supplied API key for Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or other providers, with an optional DocSmith Cloud for hosted publishing.

Pros & cons of AIGNE DocSmith
DocSmith automates a job developers usually avoid: keeping docs in sync with a changing codebase, including diagrams generated from the actual code rather than drawn by hand. It is a CLI tool for developers comfortable with npm installs and bringing their own LLM key, not a hosted product you sign into.
Pros
- Free and self-hosted, with source available under the Elastic License 2.0
- Regenerates only the documentation pages affected by a code change, not the whole site
- Produces architecture diagrams and data models from code, not just prose
Cons
- Requires comfort with a CLI and npm install rather than a web sign-up
- Generation cost depends on your own LLM API usage, billed separately by that provider
- Elastic License 2.0 restricts offering DocSmith itself as a competing hosted service
Best for
- Development teams who want documentation regenerated automatically as code changes
- Projects that need multi-language docs without a separate translation step
Not for
- Non-technical users who want a hosted, no-install documentation tool
- Teams unwilling to supply their own LLM API key or use ArcBlock's hub for generation
Watch out: Elastic License 2.0 is source-available, not a standard permissive open-source license; check it against your use case before redistributing.
