What our research says

Aider

Aider is the pick when you want a coding agent that respects your repository: every edit is a git commit, the model is whichever provider you hold a key for, and nothing leaves your machine except the prompts. It suits developers comfortable in a terminal who would rather own the loop than rent a hosted agent; people who want an IDE experience, or a vendor to call, will find it austere, and the release cadence has slowed since early 2026.

Pros

  • Apache-2.0 and free; the code, the prompts and the edit format are all inspectable
  • Git-native: automatic commits per change, easy diff and undo with standard tools
  • Provider-agnostic — Claude, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Gemini or a local model through one flag
  • Repository map plus lint-and-test after each edit keeps changes grounded on big codebases
  • Large install base: 49.6k GitHub stars and 6.8M PyPI installs as of this check

Cons

  • Last PyPI release was 0.86.2 in February 2026, and the homepage still recommends Claude 3.7 Sonnet and o1 — the model advice is stale
  • Terminal-only chat; no built-in editor UI, so reviewing a multi-file change means reading diffs
  • Token spend is yours to watch: the repo map and whole-file edit formats can be expensive on frontier models
  • Single primary maintainer and no commercial entity behind it

Claude Code

Claude Code is the reference point for terminal-first coding agents: it works from a plain shell, reaches into every editor and chat surface Anthropic ships, and its extension points (MCP, hooks, skills, subagents) are deep enough that teams build their own workflows on it. The buying decision is really about usage: Pro is enough to try it, but sustained agentic work eats the shared five-hour and weekly limits fast, and the realistic budgets are Max at $100-200 or per-token Console billing. Skip it if you want an autocomplete pane or cannot let an agent run commands in your repo.

Pros

  • One engine across terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web, mobile, GitHub, GitLab and Slack, sharing CLAUDE.md, settings and MCP servers
  • Extension points for real customisation: MCP servers, hooks, skills, plugins, parallel subagents and an Agent SDK
  • Auto mode with checks on risky commands, scheduled routines and cloud sessions that keep running when the laptop is closed
  • Included in every paid Claude plan from $17/month, with Max tiers bundling API credits

Cons

  • No free tier, and the Free plan explicitly excludes it
  • Usage comes out of the same rolling five-hour and weekly limits as chat, so heavy sessions hit the ceiling on Pro
  • Running it at scale means Max at $100-200 a month or per-token API spend that is hard to forecast
  • IDE extensions and the Linux desktop app still carry beta labels

Which one fits

Choose Aider if you need

  • Developers who want model choice and bring-your-own-key billing rather than a bundled subscription
  • Teams that need every AI edit to arrive as a reviewable git commit
  • Working on large existing repositories where the repo map keeps the model oriented

Choose Claude Code if you need

  • Developers who live in the terminal and want an agent that runs tests and opens PRs rather than suggesting lines
  • Teams automating review, triage and migrations through GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Slack
  • Engineering orgs that want to script custom agents on the same harness via the Agent SDK
