What our research says

Surfer

Surfer is the editor to buy when a team writes for Google in volume and wants a number on every draft before it ships; the term-coverage score is a proxy, but a disciplined one, and the Google Docs and WordPress routes keep writers out of yet another tab. Solo bloggers on a budget and teams who already run Clearscope will find the yearly-first pricing and the document quotas harder to love. The 2025 pivot to AI-search tracking is real but priced as a second product.

Pros

  • Live score in the editor turns a ranking-page analysis into concrete edits
  • WordPress plugin, Google Docs and Contentful integrations put the score where writing happens
  • Audit and ranking-drop alerts catch decay on pages that were once fine
  • AI-search visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews under the same login

Cons

  • Headline prices are billed yearly; monthly plans cost about 20% more
  • Documents and tracked pages are metered, and unused credits reset rather than roll over
  • API access is reserved for the Peace of Mind tier or an add-on
  • Owned by Positive Group since October 2025, so roadmap and pricing may follow the group's packaging

Writesonic

This is not the AI copywriter the catalogs still describe: it is a GEO tracking suite priced like one, and at $79 a month on annual billing you are paying monitoring money for a three-engine view of your own brand. The free plan that used to soften the entry is gone; what is left is a 7-day trial.

Pros

  • Daily prompt and answer tracking is the core of the product, not a bolt-on dashboard
  • Site audits, content generation and the Action Center sit in the same tool as the monitoring
  • 7-day trial with full access and no card, plus a 7-day refund window after paying

Cons

  • Self-serve plans watch three engines out of nine; Perplexity, Claude and Copilot are Enterprise-only
  • Month-to-month costs 25% more than the advertised annual rate ($99 against $79 on Starter)
  • No permanent free plan is listed any more, only a one-week trial
  • Prompt and article caps reset monthly, so a burst of work stalls until the counter resets

  • Brands that want one place for Google rankings and ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions

Choose Writesonic if you need

  • Brands that already know they are losing citations inside ChatGPT and want it measured
  • Agencies reporting AI-answer share of voice to clients month over month
  • Teams that want prompt tracking and article production billed on one invoice
