What our research says

BrandWell

What used to be the Content at Scale blog writer is now a suite of growth-automation modules sold separately: intent data, visitor identification, SEO writing, social listening, cold email and direct mail, with an AI employee called AIMEE threaded through them. Prices are public again and start at $99 a month per module, but the writing product alone is $249 for 25 articles, so it only pays off when you buy several modules together.

Pros

  • Prices are back on a public page, one per module, with no sales call to see them
  • Pairs intent and visitor data with the writing and outreach that acts on it
  • RankWell drafts full-length articles, with programmatic SEO on the higher tiers
  • Bootstrapped under the same founder since 2022, so no post-funding pivot risk
  • First AIMEE user included on every plan except MarketPulse Starter

Cons

  • Modules are priced separately, so a full stack runs well into four figures a month
  • RankWell Essentials is $249 a month for 25 articles, expensive next to Surfer or Clearscope plus your own model
  • Writing is no longer the core product; it is one module in a go-to-market suite
  • No public API found on the site
  • Plans are quoted monthly with no annual price shown

Surfer

Surfer is the editor to buy when a team writes for Google in volume and wants a number on every draft before it ships; the term-coverage score is a proxy, but a disciplined one, and the Google Docs and WordPress routes keep writers out of yet another tab. Solo bloggers on a budget and teams who already run Clearscope will find the yearly-first pricing and the document quotas harder to love. The 2025 pivot to AI-search tracking is real but priced as a second product.

Pros

  • Live score in the editor turns a ranking-page analysis into concrete edits
  • WordPress plugin, Google Docs and Contentful integrations put the score where writing happens
  • Audit and ranking-drop alerts catch decay on pages that were once fine
  • AI-search visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews under the same login

Cons

  • Headline prices are billed yearly; monthly plans cost about 20% more
  • Documents and tracked pages are metered, and unused credits reset rather than roll over
  • API access is reserved for the Peace of Mind tier or an add-on
  • Owned by Positive Group since October 2025, so roadmap and pricing may follow the group's packaging

Which one fits

Choose BrandWell if you need

  • B2B teams that want visitor identification, intent data and content production from one vendor
  • Agencies producing long-form SEO drafts at volume across several clients
  • Demand-gen teams that will actually use the outreach and direct-mail modules alongside the data

Choose Surfer if you need

  • Content teams and agencies producing dozens of briefed articles a month
  • SEO leads who want a repeatable brief-and-score workflow writers can follow without training
  • Brands that want one place for Google rankings and ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions
