SiteExplainer vs TLDR This

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. Both have a free tier. Only TLDR This ships a public API.

What our research says

SiteExplainer

A one-trick utility that does its one trick well: prefix any URL and get a straight answer about what a company sells. Worth bookmarking for competitor and vendor triage, not worth treating as a research tool.

Pros

  • Address-bar invocation is faster than any chat-based alternative
  • Permanent cached URLs make explanations shareable and citable
  • Source is public on GitHub and still being pushed to as of mid-2026
  • Free with no account, so there is nothing to evaluate or cancel

Cons

  • Depends on server-side rendered text; JS-heavy sites degrade the output
  • No API, no history, no way to compare several sites side by side
  • Sustained by donations, which is a thin funding base for an inference-cost product
  • A fetch of an explanation page returned the model's own instruction text in the served HTML before the answer streamed in

TLDR This

A single-job summariser that still earns its keep as a browser extension for triaging long articles. As a paid subscription it is hard to justify now that general assistants and Chrome's own built-in summariser do the same job inside tools you already have.

Pros

  • the extension summarises the page you are on in one click, with no copy-paste
  • handles URLs and PDFs, not just pasted text
  • a documented API exists for embedding summaries in other products
  • the free daily allowance covers casual reading

Cons

  • the core capability is now commoditised by general assistants and browser-native summarisers
  • the site sits behind aggressive bot protection, which makes verification and monitoring awkward
  • no visible company details, changelog or roadmap
  • output quality swings a lot depending on how the source page is structured

Which one fits

Choose SiteExplainer if you need

  • Quickly decoding a vague B2B or startup landing page
  • Sales and BD reps triaging a list of unfamiliar vendor sites
  • Sharing a one-line explanation of a product with a colleague via URL

Choose TLDR This if you need

  • skimming long-form journalism or research pages before committing to a read
  • students reducing papers and reports to bullets for revision
  • developers who want a cheap summarisation endpoint without wiring up an LLM provider
