What our research says

QuillBot

QuillBot remains the fastest way to reword a paragraph you have already written, and the free tier is enough for occasional use; Premium at roughly $8 to $20 a month depending on term buys the extra modes, longer inputs and the plagiarism checker that students actually want. Against a general chatbot it wins on speed and a purpose-built interface, not on writing quality, and against Grammarly it is cheaper but narrower.

Pros

  • Free tier includes grammar checking, two paraphrase modes, translation and AI detection
  • Extensions and apps for Chrome, Windows, macOS, Safari, iOS and Android keep it inside the writing surface
  • Paraphrase modes and a synonym slider give more control than a one-shot rewrite prompt
  • Backed by Learneo, a large education group, rather than an anonymous operator

Cons

  • Month-to-month Premium is about 2.4 times the annual rate, so the headline low price assumes a year up front
  • The site blocks automated access, so none of the figures here come from its own pricing page
  • The App Store listing itself disagrees on how many Premium paraphrase modes exist (8 versus 10+)
  • The heavy student use and the AI detector attract academic-integrity scrutiny that can rebound on users

Write Tone

Good value if you actually use several of the tools - unlimited paraphrasing, grammar checking and summarising for about $16 a month undercuts buying them separately. The honesty problem is that the same subscription sells plagiarism detection and a detector-evasion rewriter side by side, which tells you who the real customer is. Treat the 637,000-user claim as marketing.

Pros

  • Around 90 tone presets on the paraphraser, across 50+ languages
  • Grammar checking, summarising and plagiarism checking included in the same plan
  • Chrome extension and Microsoft Word integration, not web-only
  • Documented API endpoint for programmatic access
  • Free tier is a real 100,000 characters a month rather than a trial

Cons

  • Sells detector-evasion and plagiarism detection in the same subscription
  • No company country or registered address published
  • Free tier carries ads and throttles the humaniser and summariser
  • Tool count is inflated by many near-identical single-purpose pages

Which one fits

Choose QuillBot if you need

  • Students and non-native writers rewording essays and emails sentence by sentence
  • Anyone who wants grammar, paraphrase, summary and citation tools in one browser extension
  • Occasional users, since the free tier handles short rewrites without an account upsell wall

Choose Write Tone if you need

  • Students and writers who want paraphrasing plus grammar checking in one subscription
  • Non-native writers adjusting tone across many languages
  • People who want a Chrome extension rather than another browser tab
