What our research says

Eightify

A narrow tool that does one job well: decide whether an hour-long video is worth an hour before you spend it. The timestamped key points are the real feature, because they let you jump straight to the section you actually needed. The catch is that it is subscription-only for a job several free extensions and general assistants now also do.

Pros

  • Key points come with clickable timestamps, so the summary doubles as navigation
  • Handles very long recordings rather than capping at a few minutes
  • Output available in roughly 40 languages, including summarising an English video into another language
  • Works inline on the YouTube page instead of asking you to paste URLs elsewhere

Cons

  • No permanent free tier — after the trial it is pay or nothing
  • Summary quality is bounded by YouTube's auto-captions, which are poor on accented or technical speech
  • The vendor blocks automated access to its own site, so pricing and terms are hard to verify independently

Video Mood

Video Mood is a small, single-purpose tool that is genuinely free to run since the only cost is the user's own API usage, which suits anyone comfortable pasting in an API key. It is a one-person project rather than a company product, so there is no support team, no roadmap commitment, and no guarantee it stays maintained.

Pros

  • Genuinely free from the vendor's side; cost is only the user's own API usage
  • Summarizes comment sentiment alongside the video content, not just the video
  • Turnaround is about a minute per video
  • Results can be shared as a link with others

Cons

  • Requires the user to set up and pay for their own OpenAI or OpenRouter key
  • Built and maintained by one independent developer, not a company with support
