What our research says

Dot

Dot is a good fit for a company whose data already sits in a warehouse and whose non-technical staff keep asking an analyst for numbers. Putting the answer in Slack or Teams is the practical draw, and the governance features make it easier to approve than a loose chatbot over SQL. It is a poor fit for a team without a clean, documented data model, and the credit meter makes heavy use hard to forecast.

Pros

  • Answers arrive in Slack, Teams or email, where questions are already asked
  • Free plan includes full Pro features, so a real trial on company data is possible
  • Role-based access, SSO and row-level security are on the paid tiers, with SOC 2 Type II and zero data retention at the LLM providers stated on the site
  • Scheduled, presentation-style reports and a deeper multi-step analysis mode go beyond one-off SQL answers

Cons

  • Entry paid price is high for a small team and the cheapest tier excludes SSO and row-level security
  • Credit-based billing means cost depends on how long each analysis runs
  • Answer quality relies on the effort put into training it with business rules and definitions

ThoughtSpot

ThoughtSpot is the BI tool to shortlist when the goal is to let non-analysts ask their own questions of the warehouse and get a chart, not a ticket, and it now has a public entry price instead of a sales call. The catch is that the search-and-agent experience people buy it for lives on the usage-priced Pro tier and above — Essentials at $25 a seat is dashboards without Spotter — and credit-based billing is hard to budget until you have run it for a quarter.

Pros

  • Natural-language search returns live charts with drill-down rather than static reports
  • Spotter agent handles follow-ups and anomaly detection, with LLM tokens not metered by ThoughtSpot
  • Published prices from $25 per user a month and a free one-year Developer edition for embedding
  • API and SDK for embedding search, dashboards and visualisations in other products
  • Established vendor since 2012 with a named US entity and address

Cons

  • Essentials omits Spotter and the AI agents, so the headline $25 buys dashboards, not the search experience
  • Pro is priced per credit at $0.10 with no simple way to forecast spend before usage data exists
  • Annual billing and a five-user minimum on the entry tier
  • The pricing page does not label its cards clearly, so which edition a price belongs to takes guesswork

Which one fits

Choose Dot if you need

  • Operations, sales and finance teams that need quick answers without waiting on an analyst
  • Data teams that want to offload ad-hoc requests while keeping metric definitions governed
  • Companies already running Snowflake or BigQuery with Slack or Teams as the daily workspace

Choose ThoughtSpot if you need

  • Companies on Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Redshift that want self-service questions over governed data
  • Product teams embedding search-driven analytics into their own app through the API and SDK
  • Analytics teams tired of building one more dashboard variant for every stakeholder question
