What our research says

DataRobot

One of the few platforms where the governance and monitoring layer is as developed as the model-building layer, which is why regulated enterprises keep buying it even as cheaper AutoML and notebook-first rivals multiply. The marketing has pivoted hard toward agents; the predictive core is still there, but you will be buying an enterprise contract, not a tool.

Pros

  • AutoML plus a generative-AI workbench and agent builder on one platform
  • Governance, observability and approval workflows built in rather than bolted on
  • REST, Python and R clients and a CLI for code-first teams
  • Deploys SaaS, on-prem, hybrid, multi-cloud or at the edge
  • 30-day full-access trial without a contract

Cons

  • No public pricing anywhere on the site; quotes only
  • Positioning has swung from AutoML to MLOps to 'agent workforce', so the product surface is wide and the learning curve steep
  • Enterprise-only commercial model with no self-serve tier
  • Reference customers on the home page are mostly anonymised

H2O.ai

Two products under one name: a genuinely free, mature open-source ML library that data scientists have used for a decade, and an enterprise platform that only makes sense if your models must stay inside your own data centre. Evaluate them separately. The open-source side costs nothing to try; the commercial side is an annual licence negotiated after a demo, and its agentic layer is young compared with the AutoML core.

Pros

  • H2O-3 is Apache 2.0, distributed, and callable from R, Python, Scala, Java and a notebook UI
  • Commercial platform deploys on-premises, air-gapped, private cloud or managed cloud
  • One annual licence on compute and memory instead of per-token metering
  • Driverless AI AutoML, h2oGPTe and Document AI share one vendor and support contract

Cons

  • No public pricing or trial for the enterprise products; everything starts with a demo
  • The marketing now leads with a Super Agent orchestration story that is harder to evaluate than the AutoML core
  • Open-source H2O-3 and the paid platform are separate codebases, so free experiments do not simply upgrade
  • Self-hosting the full platform means owning GPUs, upgrades and integration work

Which one fits

Choose DataRobot if you need

  • Regulated enterprises that need audit trails, approval workflows and drift monitoring on every model
  • Teams running predictive and generative workloads side by side under one governance layer
  • Organisations that must deploy on-prem or air-gapped rather than in a vendor cloud

Choose H2O.ai if you need

  • Data science teams that want a free, distributed AutoML and classical ML library with R and Python bindings
  • Banks, insurers and public bodies that must run generative and predictive AI air-gapped or on-premises
  • Enterprises that prefer a compute-based annual licence to per-token cloud bills
