ChatPDF vs docAnalyzer

Two fact sheets from our own research, side by side — pricing, platforms, API access and status re-checked by us rather than quoted from the vendors. docAnalyzer publishes a starting price ($6); ChatPDF does not. Both have a free tier. Both ship a public API.

What our research says

ChatPDF

The quickest way to interrogate one long PDF without building retrieval yourself, and the page-level citations are what keep it honest. But ChatGPT and Claude now read PDFs natively, so ChatPDF only earns its subscription if you need those citations, the multi-file view, or the API.

Pros

  • answers cite specific pages, so you can check them instead of trusting them
  • handles Word, PowerPoint, Markdown and text files, not only PDF
  • REST API supports streaming and multi-turn conversations
  • free tier works with no account and no card

Cons

  • two documents a day on free runs out fast during real research
  • Plus pricing is not published anywhere on the site
  • no team plan, SSO or shared document library
  • hard per-file limit of 2,000 pages or 32 MB

docAnalyzer

A cheaper, more configurable answer to NotebookLM: unlimited documents at $12 a month, plus OCR, workspaces and the option to bring your own API key. Reviewers who moved from NotebookLM cite exactly that combination. It is a five-person bootstrapped company, so support and roadmap velocity are what you would expect at that size.

Pros

  • Unlimited uploads, questions and page counts on the $12 Pro tier
  • OCR, multi-document chat, labels and workspaces rather than a single flat file list
  • Bring-your-own-key and API access for people who want to control model spend
  • Free tier is usable for occasional work: 3 uploads and 20 prompts a day

Cons

  • The site blocks automated access, so pricing had to be corroborated second-hand
  • Five-person bootstrapped team — no funding cushion behind it
  • Company jurisdiction is not clearly published; the team is scattered across four cities
  • Basic's fair-use cap of 10,000 questions a month is a real ceiling, not a formality

Which one fits

Choose ChatPDF if you need

  • students and researchers pulling verifiable quotes out of long papers
  • checking claims inside a contract or report you did not write
  • developers wanting a hosted PDF-Q&A endpoint instead of rolling their own RAG stack

Choose docAnalyzer if you need

  • Researchers working across many long PDFs at once
  • Anyone hitting NotebookLM's source limits and wanting flat-rate unlimited uploads
  • Teams that need OCR on scanned material rather than clean digital PDFs
