What our research says

CapCut

The free tier is the most capable no-cost video editor most people will ever need — real multi-track editing, keyframes, chroma key and 1080p export without paying. Pro is worth it only for 4K and the generative tools. The genuine complaint is commercial opacity: there is no published price list anywhere on the site, and what you pay depends on your country and whether you buy through a browser or an app store.

Pros

  • The free tier includes multi-track timeline, keyframes, chroma key, speed ramping and 1080p export
  • One project syncs across iOS, Android, web, macOS and Windows
  • Automatic captioning and dubbing are fast and adequate for social output
  • Buying through the website is reported as 20-30% cheaper than through the app stores

Cons

  • No published pricing page at all — every /pricing-style path returns 404, and third-party reports of the Pro rate vary by more than double, so what you will pay stays unknown until checkout
  • Some Pro templates and effects stamp a watermark on free exports
  • 4K export, the generative toolset and the storage allowance are all paywalled
  • No API, so it cannot be driven from a pipeline

Tinker

A free grab-bag of single-purpose generators that works because the tools are narrow: product morph, virtual try-on and 3D floor plan each do one thing rather than asking you to prompt your way there. Backed by Shopify, which is why it is free and why the tool mix leans commercial. The limits are structural - mobile only, no export pipeline, and no commitment that a free app stays around.

Pros

  • Every tool and AI feature is free, with no credits or paid tier
  • Narrow presets like product morph video, virtual try-on and 3D floor plan need no prompt craft
  • Backed by Shopify, with sign-in reusing an existing Shopify account
  • Covers video, image, 3D and comics in one app rather than four

Cons

  • Mobile only - iOS 15 or Android 10 minimum, no browser version
  • No API, no batch mode and no documented export pipeline
  • Tool selection is fixed; there is no general-purpose generation mode
  • A free product with no revenue model can be discontinued with little notice
