What our research says

Canva Magic Studio

Magic Studio is worth having only if you already live in Canva: its features are ordinary next to dedicated image or copy generators, but they sit inside the document you are editing, respect the brand kit and need no export step, which is what a marketing team on a deadline actually wants. If you are not a Canva user, the generative tools are not a reason to become one. Treat the allowance system as the real price: the free plan's monthly cap is small, and heavy use of image and video generation pushes you onto Pro or Teams.

Pros

  • Generative text, image, video and edit features inside the document you are already working in
  • Brand kit, templates and collaboration carry over, so output matches the rest of the deck or post
  • Free plan includes a monthly allowance, so the features can be tried without paying
  • Available on web, desktop and mobile apps under one account

Cons

  • Image and video quality trail dedicated generators, and control over the result is limited
  • Monthly use caps per plan are the real limit and have been changed more than once
  • No API or standalone access; it exists only inside Canva
  • Canva blocks automated reading of its pages, so limits and prices had to be taken from third parties

Microsoft Designer

Free enough to be worth having on the taskbar and genuinely good at one-off social graphics, but the credit pool is small and shared, so it is a convenience tool rather than something a design workflow can lean on.

Pros

  • Usable for free with a Microsoft account and no separate purchase
  • Output stays layered and editable instead of arriving as a flat image
  • Runs on web, Windows, iOS and Android with the same account

Cons

  • 15 free credits a month is a handful of generations, not a workflow
  • The 60-credit subscriber pool is shared with Copilot across Office, so Designer competes with Word for it
  • Credits reset monthly with no rollover
  • No API and no published standalone pricing page

  • Microsoft 365 households already paying for the subscription
  • Quick social posts, invitations and thumbnails where speed beats control
  • Light photo cleanup such as background removal and object erase
