What our research says

Bigjpg

For anime and illustration upscaling it remains a reference tool, and the multi-month bundles are cheap — $22 covers a year. It shows its age against diffusion-based upscalers on photographic detail, and free-tier jobs require keeping the browser tab open.

Pros

  • Distinct anime-tuned models keep lines and flat colors clean
  • Very low cost: $22 buys twelve months of paid limits
  • Clients on every major platform plus an API
  • Free tier is enough to evaluate output quality

Cons

  • Interpolates rather than reinvents detail — soft results on complex photos
  • Free jobs fail if you close the browser; images auto-delete after 24 hours
  • Anonymous operator; processing defaults to mainland-China servers

Magnific

Magnific is Freepik with a new name and the AI generators at the front: one subscription now buys stock downloads, upscaling and generation across thirty-odd models, which is more breadth per euro than any single-model service. The catch is credit arithmetic that differs per model and a rebrand still settling, with Freepik branding, Magnific the upscaler and Magnific the company overlapping. Fine for design teams that already lived in Freepik; confusing for anyone shopping for one specific generator.

Pros

  • Stock library, upscaler and 30+ generation models under one plan
  • Credits are valid for a year, not reset monthly
  • Premium+ is marketed as unlimited generations, which suits heavy iteration
  • Operator is a long-established, registered Spanish company with public registry details

Cons

  • Credit cost varies by model, so the headline credit totals do not translate into a fixed number of images
  • Pricing page localises to local currency and the free tier's allowances were not visible in our fetch
  • Extra credits are bought by contacting the vendor rather than self-serve
  • The rebrand leaves three overlapping names: Freepik, Magnific the upscaler and Magnific the platform

Which one fits

Choose Bigjpg if you need

  • Anime and illustration upscales where line integrity matters
  • Budget users wanting a year of upscaling for the price of one month elsewhere
  • Developers calling a simple upscaling API

Choose Magnific if you need

  • Design and marketing teams that want stock assets and AI generation on one bill
  • Creators who switch between image and video models rather than committing to one
  • Agencies that need commercial-use licensing covered by the subscription
