Overview

About Anse

Anse is a self-hosted, open-source web interface for chatting with multiple AI providers from one screen. Instead of running its own models, it connects to OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Replicate through API keys you supply, storing conversation history locally in the browser rather than on a server. Besides text chat, it can drive image generation through DALL-E and Stable Diffusion, and its plugin system lets developers wire in additional providers. Anyone can deploy their own copy to Vercel, Netlify, or Docker; the hosted anse.app instance serves as the project's live demo rather than a managed commercial product.

Editorial verdict

Pros & cons of Anse

low confidence

Anse suits developers who want a fast, no-frills front end for multiple model APIs without paying for a hosted chat product, and who are comfortable typing in their own OpenAI or Replicate key. The catch: the public anse.app instance is a bare demo with no onboarding, and the project depends on community maintenance rather than a company behind it.

Pros

  • free and open source under an MIT license
  • connects to several model providers (OpenAI, Azure, Gemini, Replicate) from one UI
  • supports both text chat and image generation modes
  • keeps conversation data in the browser instead of a vendor server

Cons

  • the public demo has essentially no onboarding or explanation on screen
  • does nothing without your own paid API keys, so total cost depends entirely on provider usage
  • no company or support channel behind the project

Best for

  • developers who already hold API keys for OpenAI or Replicate
  • teams wanting a self-hosted chat UI instead of a subscription
  • anyone testing multiple model providers side by side

Not for

  • non-technical users who want a ready-made account with no setup
  • teams needing vendor support or an SLA

Watch out: You need your own OpenAI, Replicate, or similar API key before the interface does anything useful — it doesn't include model access.
